Observation Narrative
This small tract of tidal swamp forest (ca. 2 acres) is representative of tidal swamp vegetation along this section of the Chickahominy. Water-tolerant species predominate. The forest is inundated twice daily by the tides. As determined by the level of the incoming tide, this forested vegetation is only ca. 25 cm higher than an adjacent tidal marsh, which suggests dramatic vegetation change along a water depth gradient. Because of the late sampling date, the cover of some species may be underestimated (cover of Decodon verticillatus and Hibiscus moscheutos estimated as if all foliage were present).
Vernonia noveboracensis, Lobelia cardinalis, Cardamine longii, Eriocaulon parkeri and Sagittaria sp. are restricted to the more open, riverbank zone. Taxodium distichum individuals average ca. 50 cm dbh.
Plot located on north shore of the Chickahominy River, 0.5 mi southwest of junction of Rt. 627 and railroad tracks.
